India: More than just the Taj Mahal
Many people who have travelled to India describe it as a type of sensory overload. There is so much to experience, so much to see and so much to soak in that it can all be pretty overwhelming. As one of the most populous countries in the world, India is home to more than a billion people. The only country in the world having 22 different languages spoken in all different states describes one of its kind. You might not get to meet all different people and its culture personally, but even a short trip to India will reveal a country that is teeming with promise and home to one of the most diverse populations in the world. It is this cultural diversity that makes India such a magnet for western visitors. Whether they come from Europe, the United States, Canada or elsewhere in the America’s those visitors are drawn to the unique nature of India and all that entails.
India is a large country in terms of square mileage as well as population, and getting around can sometimes be a challenge. That is why so many first-time visitors choose package tours and pre-planned itineraries. These package tours can be a great way to see the country and all the wonders it contains. Just be sure the tour you book includes the must-see sites every visitor to India should be sure to see.
The Lake Palace in the city of Udaipur is one site no visitor to India can afford to miss. This stunning palace is a good example of the cultural diversity. India is known for, both now and in the distant past. First built as a royal summer palace in the 18 th century, today the Lake Palace is a luxury 5-star hotel. If you can swing it, you might want to book a few nights here. If not, feel free to visit and see how the other half lives. Tourism is a major industry in India, and you will see Indian citizens from all walks of life on even the shortest visit. When you visit the Lake Palace, you may recognize the exterior from the famous James Bond film Octopussy, which was filmed partially on-site. If you do stay at the hotel, you will be transported across the lake by boat. The hotel operates a special jetty to transport guests to and from shore.
Speaking of the world, you can visit one of its wonders at the famous Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is perhaps the best known and most-visited sites in all of India, and it is the highlight of many a package tour. The Taj Mahal is one of the few tourist attractions to have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally built by the Emperor as a temple for his eternal love, the palace known as the Taj Mahal is simply too spectacular to miss. You can learn about the history of India as you walk the halls and stroll along the beautiful reflecting pools. You simply cannot leave India without a visit to this iconic site. There are plenty of things to see and do while in India, but in the end it is the warmth of the people and the charm of the surroundings you will bring home with you. India is known as a welcoming place, and the Indian people love to meet visitors from around the world and learn about their cultures. This type of cultural exchange is what travel is all about, and it is one of the reasons India remains a prime tourist destination.

I was supposed to go to India last year with my church group for 9-10 days. I decided to wait, though. Now, I wish I had gone already. Especially watching the video “Incredible India” — All I can say now is, “I can’t wait to go.”
