The city of Thessalonica (Thessaloniki) is full of Bible history, and it is a favorite tourist destination. Thessaloniki Archaeology Museum

This museum offers a wonderful display of Macedonian antiquities, including a large number of gold art pieces. All of the signs are in English, well written, and very informative. One outstanding piece of art is a very large mosaic about Dionysus, which was discovered in a local private villa. Visitors returning to Greece always revisit this beautiful museum.

 

 

 

Museum of Byzantine Culture

This museum is a neighbor to the Thessaloniki Archaeology Museum and you can get a discounted ticket to visit both. There are stunning displays of Byzantine culture, and many fascinating artifacts. The exhibits are laid out in beautiful order with detailed descriptions for every display.

 

Museum of the Macedonian Struggle

This museum tells the story of the Greek struggle to liberate the Ottomans and the Bulgarians. It’s a fascinating story and highlights the sacrifices Greeks made and in their effort to restore freedom. The material is presented in an unbiased way. 

 

War Museum of Thessaloniki

This museum honors the Greek Army and the many battles fought since the middle ages. It’s a very well organized museum and a must visit for the history and war buff. The exhibit information is written in Greek, English, and Russian. Guides are available for free and offer great information and insights to all the displays.

White Tower

In the fifteenth-century, the tower was built to replace an older Byzantine fortification. It had multiple uses over the centuries. It was used as a fort for harbor defense, a garrison, and a prison known as the Tower of Blood or Red Tower. It was believed to have been whitewashed in the late 1800s and was renamed the White Tower. A beautiful panoramic view is visible from the tower’s highest level. Inside the tower is a lovely museum. 

Church of Hagia Sofia

This beautiful church of Byzantine architecture was constructed in the eighth-century. The dome is covered in intricate frescos, and the altar is exquisite. Hagia Sofia is one of the 17 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki. 

Arch of Galerius and Rotunda

These two beautiful  archeological sites remind us of the city’s amazing past. The Emperor Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus built the arch and rotunda to commemorate the victory over Persia. The auxiliary structures that connected the arch and the rotunda have been gone for many years.
